The National Audit Office recommended in its 2006 report into college procurement that: ‘Colleges should review their data on procurement and how it can be better analysed to provide useful management information.’
Sensible advice for sure, but the more cynical amongst us could be forgiven for responding: ‘That’s easy for them to say.’ With one or two exceptions, the truth is that college finance systems are notoriously difficult to interrogate for spending data – it’s simply not what they were set up to do.
